Car Detailing in Adelaide: What It Actually Covers and How Often You Need It
Drive-through car washes have their place — a quick rinse after a dusty week on the freeway, sure. But if you're trying to maintain the condition of your paint, your interior, or the resale value of the car, a wash doesn't get you there. Adelaide car detailing is a different service, done by hand, and it covers a lot of ground that a wash never touches.
Here's what a proper detail involves, how long it takes, and how often your car genuinely needs one given what South Australian conditions put it through.
A car wash cleans the surface. A detail addresses the car.
A car wash removes loose surface dirt. It won't touch bonded contamination in the paint, won't address the interior beyond a basic vacuum, and does nothing for clear coat condition, upholstery, or trim.
A full professional detail works through the whole vehicle exterior and interior methodically and by hand:
Area
What's Covered
Exterior paint
Hand wash, decontamination, clay bar treatment, polish or light paint correction, protective wax or sealant
Wheels & tyres
Brake dust removal, rim cleaning, tyre dressing
Glass
All glass is clean and streak-free inside and out, including the windshield.
Interior surfaces
Full vacuum including boot, hard surfaces wiped and conditioned, door jambs cleaned
Upholstery
Fabric shampooing or leather cleaning and conditioning, depending on interior type
Vents & trim
Air vents cleaned out, dash and console wiped down, plastics rejuvenated
What's included in your car depends on its condition when it comes in. A well-maintained vehicle takes less time than one that hasn't been touched in a couple of years, and we'll tell you upfront what's involved before we start.
How Long Does It Take?
A basic detail on a clean car takes 2 to 4 hours. A full detail on a car in average condition takes five to eight hours. If the paint needs correction first—swirl marks, oxidation, or deeper scratches removed—before a protective coating goes on, that can take a full day or more, depending on the severity.
There's no way to rush it and get the same result. Each step has to be done properly before the next one starts.
How Often Does Your Car Actually Need It?
For a daily driver, every three to six months is a reasonable interval. In South Australia, err toward the shorter end.
Through summer, SA goes weeks — sometimes the entire month of January — without meaningful rainfall. Bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime that land on paint in December can still be sitting there in February, slowly etching into the clearcoat in temperatures that regularly push past 35°C. Sydney and Brisbane cars get rinsed by summer storms far more often. Ours don't.
If your car does long country runs or parks under gum trees, quarterly service is worth it. A car that stays in the garage or is used only over the weekend can reasonably stretch its service interval to twice a year.
Detailing Before a Sale
Getting a full car detail done before you sell or trade is one of the most straightforward ways to protect your asking price. Buyers and dealers notice the condition of a car immediately, like stained seats, dull paint, or a musty interior, which gives them a negotiating point before they've even looked under the bonnet.
A thorough detail removes those objections before the first inspection. Pair it with an interior protection treatment, and the condition holds up properly, rather than looking great for a week, then going backwards.
When Detailing Won't Be Enough
Detailing cleans and protects — it doesn't correct paint damage. If your car has swirl marks, visible scratches, or oxidation, those need a paint correction first. That's a separate process that uses machine polishing to remove defects before any coating is applied.
We at Ceramicar check the paint before we recommend anything. If correction is needed, we say so—because coating over damaged paint locks those defects in permanently, and we won't do that to a customer's car.
We're an MTA-approved workshop based in Windsor Gardens, with 27 years of experience working on vehicles across Adelaide, SA. Most Adelaide car owners don't think about paint protection until they're standing in the driveway one afternoon and notice the panels don't look quite right anymore. The colour's still there, but the depth is gone. There's a dullness to it. A few scratches that weren't there last year. Maybe the bonnet's starting to show that […]
Most people first hear about paint protection from a car dealer. You've just signed the papers on a new car, and they slide a quote across the desk—a few hundred dollars, sometimes more, for "paint protection." No real explanation of what it does. Just a line on an invoice. That's a poor introduction to something […]

It is often very tough to keep your expensive car outside during chilly winters. With such prolonged exposure to fog, the exterior paint on your car would have its colour washed out, primarily at the early stages of corrosion. When you start parking your vehicle outside the house, its unprotected parts will get contaminated with […]
