What does 'RAA approved' really mean? 5 Standards Our Detailing Had to Pass

Most South Australians grew up with the RAA. It's the yellow van that turns up when your battery dies in a Bunnings car park. The Royal Automobile Association has been part of driving in this state since 1903, and today around 800,000 South Australians are members.

Fewer people know the RAA also runs an approved repairer network: just over 400 businesses across the state that it has personally vetted and continues to audit. Crash repairers, mechanics, auto electricians, and a much smaller group in speciality categories such as automotive detailing.

Getting into that network isn't a matter of paying a fee and downloading a logo. In thirty-odd years of writing about this industry, I've watched plenty of badges get invented purely for marketing. This isn't one of them. The RAA judges each business before approving it, and it keeps checking afterwards. Since we went through the process ourselves, it's worth explaining what a detailer has to pass, because when you're comparing car detailing Adelaide businesses, this is one of the few independent quality signals that means something.

The Five Standards Behind the Badge

  1. Proven knowledge, skills and equipment

Before approval, the RAA assesses whether a business genuinely has the knowledge, skills and equipment to perform work at a high standard in its specific category. For detailing, that meant the RAA looked at our workshop, our machines, our products and our people before deciding we belonged in the network. They weren't interested in how the website reads or the Instagram looks; they wanted to see the actual operation.

Detailing has no licensing requirement in South Australia, so anyone can call themselves a professional. An assessment of real capability, by an organisation with no interest in flattering us, is worth more than any self-promotion.

  1. Guaranteed workmanship

Every RAA Approved Repairer must guarantee the quality of its workmanship. And guarantee is the RAA's word, not ours. It's a condition of staying in the network, not a line someone in marketing came up with.

For a car detailing service, this matters more than in most trades. When a nano ceramic coating is applied, you can't judge the preparation underneath it. Poor decontamination or rushed panel work stays invisible until the coating starts failing months later. A workmanship guarantee backed by an outside body means the accountability outlasts the handover.

  1. A fair pricing policy

Approved Repairers commit to fair pricing, including providing written estimates and never charging for work that hasn't been done or isn't needed. In practice, that shapes how we quote: you get a written price based on an actual inspection of your vehicle, and if we recommend paint correction before coating, we'll show you why on your own paintwork rather than adding it to every invoice.

  1. A category-specific Code of Practice

Most people miss this detail. There isn't one generic RAA code every business signs. Each repairer follows the RAA Code of Practice specific to its category, so a crash repairer and a detailer are each held to standards written for their actual work. Our obligations were assessed against detailing, which is also why the yellow RAA signage outside an approved business names the category it's approved for. If you see the sign, check the category matches the work you're booking.

  1. Ongoing audits, not a one-off tick

Approval isn't permanent. To remain accredited, every repairer must maintain its equipment and qualification standards and undergo periodic audits. The RAA checks that the business it approved three years ago is still the business operating today. Plenty of accreditations in this trade are pay-once, display-forever. This accredition can be taken away, which is the whole point.

RAA Approved - the 5 standards that detailer has to pass before earning the "RAA approved repairer" badge in South Australia.

Here's how the five standards translate for you:

RAA standardWhat it means when you book
Assessed capabilityThe workshop, equipment and skills were verified by the RAA, not self-claimed
Workmanship guaranteeThe quality of the work is guaranteed as a condition of accreditation
Fair pricing policyWritten estimates, no charges for unneeded or undone work
Category Code of PracticeStandards written for detailing specifically, not generic promises
Regular auditsStandards are re-checked over time, so the badge stays earned

What It Means for You as a Customer

You don't need to be an RAA member to book with an "Approved Repairer". Anyone can use the network, and everyone gets the same standards. Membership adds two things: if you're ever unsatisfied, the RAA can step in as a mediator, and members receive discounts at participating repairers.

The mediation part is worth dwelling on. If a dispute arises with a random operator found through an automotive detailing near me search, your options are a strongly worded review. With an Approved Repairer, an organisation of 800,000 members that vouched for the business has skin in the game. In 27-plus years, Ceramicar Adelaide has never needed a mediator, but being part of a network where one exists keeps every business working honestly with end users.

Verifying It Takes Two Minutes

Don't take any business's word for its accreditation, including ours. The RAA runs a repairer locator on raa.com.au where you can search by service type and suburb, and the yellow Approved Repairer sign on a workshop states the approved category. If a detailer claims RAA approval and doesn't appear in the locator, that tells you everything you need to know about their other claims too. If you're comparing quotes, bookmark this page and run every business on your shortlist through that locator before you commit.

What "RAA" accreditation Means When We Apply Ceramic coating to Your Car

This is where it all becomes concrete. A quality nano ceramic coating gives your paint a hard, glossy layer that blocks the UV that hammers Adelaide cars from November through March, stops bird droppings and tree sap etching in, and roughly halves your washing time because grime struggles to stick. Done properly, it also protects resale value, because faded, swirled paint is the first thing a buyer haggles on.

Every benefit above depends on preparation you'll never see: decontamination, correction, a dust-controlled cure. Coating with an RAA Approved Repairer means that invisible work sits behind a workmanship guarantee, a written quote, an audited workshop, and a mediator you can call on if we ever fall short. The coating protects your paint. The accreditation protects your money.

Our RAA Member Offer

We didn't pursue RAA approval for the sign. An independent body checking our work keeps us at the standard our customers pay for, and South Australians trust the RAA for good reason.

To back that in a practical way, Ceramicar Adelaide offers RAA members 10% off all ceramic coating packages. Whether you're protecting a brand new vehicle before its first summer or restoring a daily driver, mention your membership when booking, and the discount applies to the coating package.

Book a free paint inspection at our Windsor Gardens automotive workshop and we'll look over your vehicle under proper lighting, talk you through the right level of protection for how you actually use the car, and put the price in writing before you commit. After all, a written quote isn't us being polite. It's one of the standards we're audited on.

Common Questions

RAA Approved Detailing — FAQ

  • No. Any car owner in Adelaide can book with us and receive the same RAA-verified standards, workmanship guarantee, and written quote regardless of membership status.

RAA membership adds two things: access to RAA mediation if you're ever unsatisfied with the outcome, and a 10% discount on all ceramic coating packages. Simply mention your membership when you book.

  • Don't take our word for it. The RAA runs a public repairer locator at raa.com.au where you can search by service type and suburb. Search for automotive detailing in Windsor Gardens or Adelaide and Ceramicar will appear.

You'll also see the yellow RAA Approved Repairer sign at our workshop, which states the approved category. If a detailer claims RAA approval but doesn't appear in the locator, that tells you everything you need to know.

  • Every RAA Approved Repairer must guarantee the quality of its workmanship as a binding condition of network membership — it's not a voluntary add-on. For ceramic coating, that guarantee covers the preparation work you can't see: the decontamination, paint correction, and panel-by-panel application process that determines how the coating performs over time.

If you're unsatisfied and we can't resolve it directly, RAA members can escalate to the RAA for independent mediation. That external accountability is what makes the guarantee meaningful.

  • MTA (Motor Trade Association) approval is an industry-based accreditation. It demonstrates legitimate trade membership and a commitment to industry standards across the broader automotive sector.

RAA approval is consumer-facing. It requires the RAA to independently assess a business's actual capability, equipment, and premises before approving it — and to keep auditing it afterwards. Ceramicar holds both, meaning the business has been vetted from both an industry and a consumer-protection perspective.

  • Yes, and that's the whole point. RAA accreditation is not a one-time tick. Every Approved Repairer undergoes periodic audits to confirm their equipment, qualifications, and service standards remain at the level they were assessed on. The accreditation can be withdrawn at any time if standards slip.

This is what separates it from most badges in this industry, where you pay once and display the logo indefinitely regardless of what happens to the business.

  • Yes. We offer a free paint inspection at our Windsor Gardens workshop. We look over your vehicle under proper lighting, talk through the right level of protection for how you use the car, and provide a written price before you commit to anything.

A written quote isn't courtesy — it's one of the standards we're audited on as an RAA Approved Repairer. Book online or call (08) 8261 3552 to arrange an inspection.
